A practicing potter since 1966 at his family's ceramic works in Kasama, Yukikatsu Isobe is still exploring, still learning. This kyūsu style tea pot shows the quick skills of a traditional Japanese potter. The spout, body, lid and handle are all made individually and assembled in a time-honoured process. A perforated ceramic dome on the spout inner, prevents leaves entering the cup. The stamped and dripped glaze on the outer also highlights the earthy material quality of the handmade ceramic item, and the iron content within the Kasama clay. Isobe has perfected the angle of the spout to prevent drips, and has it the muscle memory of his making process. This is just part of the skill of the craftsperson ever present in his work.

About Yukikatsu Isobe

Yukikatsu Isobe has been a practising potter since 1966, and is part of the rich reserve of craftspeople in Kasama. His family’s pottery works was established in 1795, and has ridden the changing tides in ceramics. When Isobe began at the business in 1968, it was at the height of the post-war arts and crafts boom in Japan, and this had a formative influence on his work.  Adapting to tastes, Isobe has never compromised in delivering the skill of a craftsperson, and in providing a connection to the folk art history of Kasama and Japan. His work has both a tradition, and a freedom.
