About Masafumi Kawamatsu
Masafumi Kawamatsu works far from the main settlement of Kasama pottery, and in a location surrounded by nature. Retaining the spirit of the Japanese farmer-potter, his impetus in ceramics was to continue the tradition passed to him by his father. Mountains, fields, clay and a simple family kiln. Kawamatsu’s pottery is shaped on the wheel and fired into forms that have been used in the Japanese home for as long as anyone can remember. He is also free in his imagination, with a coffee cups series for example, meant to contrast the sea with its changing blues, up against the sandy shore. Since taking over the business in 2008, Kawamatsu has achieved success in ceramics prizes, and is recognised for both the ideas and traditional quality behind his work.
