These special edition woodblock print animals were made by Shin Kōgei to commemorate the year of the tiger, 2022.
They are available in two variations: tiger cub, and slightly larger.
Shin Kōgei were founded in Hida-Takayama in the snowy north of Gifu prefecture by a local artist, and their shop is located within the town. Hida-Takayama was an important castle settlement in the Middle Ages, and has a fine tradition for wood craft. Today it retains an atmospheric connection to the past.
Shin Kōgei use wood to make their printing blocks. Designs are transferred to the woodblocks, before being hand dyed onto natural cotton. Each colour designates a different block used, showing the time spent on each. The animals are filled with natural casks and hand sewn.
The cub is around 7cm high, and 4cm wide. The larger tiger is 13cm wide and 5cm high. As each is handmade there may be some small variations.
