These hand crafted bamboo earrings were made by Mikiko Sato at her Cotake studio in Beppu, Oita.
Made to be simple in design, but with a presence - the accessories join two circles of bamboo harvested in Oita. The natural material will age over time, and take on a deeper shade of brown.
Sato names the pieces ‘ruru’, a Japanese word for a long continuation, her referring to the form of the accessories. She cut the stem of bamboo into strips and completed each process in the making by hand.
The earrings are 4.3cm wide, 5cm high (6.5cm, including their fastenings). They weigh 50g.
About Cotake
Cotake is the project of designer, maker and shop owner Mikiko Sato. A native of Beppu in Oita, Sato was inspired by the possibilities contained in her town’s tradition in bamboo craft. Building her own skill and original approach to the material she created a range of accessories that within their small size speak to a heritage of craft in bamboo. Of beautiful nature moulded by hand into beautiful forms. Cotake in Beppu is a space for bamboo makers, a shop containing Sato’s work, a place for workshops, and a room adjourning to her house. It takes its name from the Japanese words for child (ko) and bamboo (take), and is a personal project that Sato has nurtured.
