These bowls, suitable for salad or for serving, were made by the Tobe-ware artist Kimiko Tanaka at her Yōki-gama kiln.
Each is decorated with a hand painted design applied by Tanaka. The Tobe-ware tradition in which she works is known for such ‘sometsuke’ brush work, but even within this, Tanaka’s ceramics have a particular intricacy.
There are around 100 kilns today in the Tobe ceramic area, which has a tradition that began as an off-shoot of Arita porcelain in the 18th century. Small kilns each work in the region’s legacy in making, and in this case are personified by Kimiko Tanaka, whose ceramics are a lone endeavour.
For these bowls, she has worked with her brush to decorate both the inner and outer surfaces with floral patterns, and a distinctive chintz. There are three to choose from.
The approximate diameter of each bowl is 18.5 cm, and the Height 9.5cm. The bowls weigh around 670g each.
