This box is by the traditional paper maker Keijusha, and in its patterns recalls those of the Ainu in northern Japan.
Keijusha, is based in the north coast prefecture of Toyama, are a maker of Japanese paper. This paper, Echizen Yatsuo washi, is stronger and thicker than most of the many forms of washi paper found in Japan.
What sets Keijusha apart in their paper products is both the texture of this paper, and quality of their patterns. The designs were realised with stencil dye method, developed in collaboration with the renowned textile designer Keisuke Serizawa (1895-1984). His spirit still informs the work. Keijusha's innovations in washi have sustained the once almost lost paper tradition of their region.
